Sony Launches World's First *1 OLED TV

Sony today introduced the world's first*1 OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV, "XEL-1". The 11-inch OLED TV "XEL-1" proposes a ground-breaking new TV design, with its astonishing thinness measuring approximately 3mm (at its thinnest point). "XEL-1" also incorporates Sony's independently developed "Organic Panel*2", which realizes advantages such as high contrast, high peak brightness, color reproduction, rapid response time, all of which combine to deliver unparalleled image quality.*1 As of October 1, 2007. Based on Sony research.*2 Name of Sony OLED panel

* Main Features of "XEL-1"
Thinness: Proposes new TV form factor measuring approximately 3mm thinness (at its thinnest point)
High contrast: Reproduces realistic images using exquisite shades of black, and flexible control of color tone and gradation
High peak brightness: Faithfully reproduces picture glow
Excellent color reproduction: Delivers pure and vivid colors in both dark and bright images
Rapid response time: Smoothly reproduces fast-moving images such as sports scenes
Low power consumption
Thinness: Proposes new TV form factor measuring approximately 3mm thinness (at its thinnest point)As OLEDs are light-emitting, there is no need for a separate light source such as a backlight system. Sony's "Organic Panel" consists of an organic material layer of just several hundred nanometers thickness, with two extremely thin glass panels aligned on either side of the organic material layer. This realizes a new TV form factor measuring approximately 3mm at its thinnest point.
High contrast: Reproduces realistic images using exquisite shades of black and flexible control of color tone and gradationWith its light-emitting structure, the OLED display can prevent light emission when reproducing shades of black, enabling "XEL-1" to reproduce very deep blacks (contrast ratio 1,000,000:1). Furthermore, XEL-1 can control all the phases of light emission from zero to peak brightness, generating color expression and subtleties conventional displays cannot match.
High peak brightness: Faithfully reproduces picture glow"Super Top Emission," a technology unique to Sony and incorporated in its "Organic Panel" has a high aperture ratio which allows for efficient light emission from the organic materials, realizing high peak brightness. This enables "XEL-1" to faithfully reproduce light flow such as reflections of sun light or camera flashlights through the image reproduced on the display.
Excellent color reproduction: Delivers pure and vivid colors in both dark and bright imagesIn order to use OLED to generate the full spectrum of Sony's TV color requirements, Sony developed its own proprietary organic materials, with bright coloration. In addition, the micro-cavity structure of "Super Top Emission" and the color extracting technology within its embedded color filter enable "XEL-1" to reproduce natural colors beautifully. As a result, the fresh colors of ripe fruit and shades of deep cobalt blue can be stunningly reproduced. The "Organic Panel" can also sustain its color reproduction capability in scenes of diminished brightness, enabling "XEL-1" to faithfully recreate even dark movie scenes using the colors that were originally intended.
Rapid response time: Smoothly reproduces fast moving images such as sports scenesSince OLED can spontaneously turn the light emitted from the organic material layer on and off, OLED is capable of very rapid response times. Newly developed OLED drive circuits enable "XEL-1" to reproduce fast moving images such as sports scenes smoothly and naturally.
Low power consumptionOLED does not require a separate light source due to its light-emitting structure, therefore it can be powered using very low voltages. This means that OLED TVs consume extremely low levels of power compared with other display devices. The power consumption of "XEL-1" is as low as 45W.

Godrej launches new EON washing machines

Godrej Appliances launches its new EON Washing Machine with DAC Technology. This breakthrough Dynamic Aqua-Power Control (DAC) Technology can sense and adjust to water and power cuts by monitoring the flow of water and power into the washing machine, and set the machine accordingly. If there is a break in water or power, it goes into 'sleep mode'; and when the water and power supply resumes, the wash gets reactivated and continues from where it stopped. For those who aren't too comfortable with leaving the machine on and leave the house, just put the machine on manual mode. When the power or water is available the machine activates itself and starts to give your clothes the whitest wash, if there's a power or water-cut then as mentioned above the machine slips into Sleep mode and restarts when there's water and power. The two machines, GWF 650 PS DAC and GWF 620 FS DAC come in capacities of 6.5 and 6.2 kgs respectively. Both are equipped with a steel drum, five programmes, four water levels, spin free mode, Fuzzy logic technology, child lock and 2-year warranty. Also, these washing machine sets a trend of sorts by sporting some exciting colours including melon red, kiwi green, yellow nectar and icy blue. The GWF 650 PS DAC is priced at Rs 12,500 and the 620 FS DAC is available at an MRP of Rs 14,000 The EON Washing Machines will be available in the north markets through Godrej's own showrooms and dealer network.

Ford unveils the Figo, new small car for India

One of the world's largest car maker i.e. Ford Motor Company unveiled a new small car at a press conference in Delhi, India on Wednesday. The subcompact, which is called the Figo, will be produced in India for the Indian market, as well as for export to other Asian countries and Africa.

The Figo's launch "signals Ford's intention to compete in India's largest and most important small-car market segment," the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker said in an announcement.

A little over 1 million passenger cars are sold in India each year, according to Ford spokesman Mark Schirmer. The automaker expects India to become the third largest market for small cars, behind the U.S. and China, by 2030.

India-based Tata Motors and Japan's Suzuki Motors are currently among the country's biggest-selling carmakers.

Ford has invested $500 million in its factory near Chennai, India, to prepare it for high-volume production of the Figo, the automaker said, doubling the plant's capacity to 200,000 units per year.

The Figo was designed and engineered in India, Ford said, but it's based on the existing small-car engineering platform that's already used for the Ford Fiesta.

Ford currently sells a version of the Fiesta in India, as well as three of its other car models. While all of these Ford models would be considered small cars in the U.S., they're each bigger than the Figo, which is about the size of a Honda Fit.

According to Ford, small cars like these makes up about 70% of the Indian car market. "[That's] where the meat of the Indian market is," Ford spokesman Mark Schirmer said.

Tata Motors launches Freelander 2 in India

It can't be easy trying to launch a new model in a country with a 100% import tariff but the job is not made much easier when you look at the other vehicles that are also available in the same market.

For 3,500,000 rupees (around £45,000 or the price of a small flat in Bangalore) you can get the same spec Freelander 2 as sold in the US and EU. But other SUVs are available for less than half that cost from the likes of Hyundai and Toyota.

India is seen as an important market by all motor manufacturers as more traditional local markets continue to contract (and as more strict rules on safety and emissions come online) Hopefully Land Rover, under the expert guidance of the TATA parent company, will be able to take advantage of this.
