. Obama Care and New Coke

This week marked the 25th anniversary of the introduction of "New Coke." It was a remarkable event, and well worth remembering for the unique response of the Coca-Cola Company's management to subsequent events.
The two of us were working with the Coca-Cola Company at the time. It was abundantly clear to us and all involved that this was not just another product launch: It crossed over from product marketing into the social and political sphere. In image polling we had seen the unique identity Coke had for the American people, whether they were Coca-Cola consumers or not.
New Coke was introduced by the company with high hopes, and they had good reasons for such optimism. It was a drink that consumers in blind taste tests rated superior not only to Pepsi, but also to Coca-Cola.
Despite consumers' immediate acceptance of the new beverage and an initial jump in sales, resistance began to form in small protests around the country. Sales began to lag. The objection was not so much to the new product itself, but to the company's hubris in removing the traditional Coca-Cola from the shelves to make way for the new.
It seems to us there may be some lessons here for politicians regarding ObamaCare. Just as most Americans were happy with the old Coke, 85% of Americans were happy with their own health-care plans at the time that ObamaCare was introduced. In essence, those plans were taken away from them in the same way the old Coke was taken away. And, as was the case with New Coke, opposition has continued to grow. This is personal for the American people.
Twenty-five years ago, faced with a successful launch but growing and vocal public resistance, the Coca-Cola Company's leadership did the extraordinary. They reversed themselves and returned classic Coca-Cola to supermarket shelves just 77 days after the debut of New Coke. Coke President Donald Keough actually went on national television to admit the mistake, essentially saying: We were wrong, but at least we're smart enough to listen to you.
People not only rejoiced, they rewarded the company with unprecedented gains in volume and market share.
After the Scott Brown Senate victory in Massachusetts, the administration had just such an opportunity. In February's bipartisan health-care summit, President Obama could have pulled a Keough, by listening to the desires of the American people and reshaping his proposal in response. Instead, the administration and the Democratic leadership decided to steamroll their plan through Congress.
As we've seen again and again over the past few years, admitting a mistake is almost constitutionally impossible for today's corporate chiefs, and even harder for politicians. Don Keough's lesson of transferring ownership of classic Coca-Cola back to the people—and the resulting success of that brand—has unfortunately been lost on those in Washington. They will pay a steep price for ignoring his example.

. Ford Figo Brings ‘Cool’ to India

Ford is betting a large part of its future on a revamped lineup of small cars, such as the 2010 Ford Figo. In colloquial Italian, the name means “cool.” But apart from the cute name and low price tag, the Figo won’t directly translate to boosting Ford’s small car sales in North America. That task belongs to the Ford Fiesta subcompact, which arrives this spring.
Built on the same platform as the Fiesta, the new Figo is Ford’s first small car built specifically for the needs of Indian car buyers. Compact, easy to repair and inexpensive cars make up about 70 percent of the Indian market. But until now, Ford lacked an entry-level car to compete with popular low-cost offerings from Hyundai, Maruti-Suzuki, Tata Motors and General Motors.
The Ford Icon sedan, formerly the company’s cheapest offering in India, was simply too expensive with a base price hovering around $10,000. The 2010 Figo will be much more affordable when it goes on sale later this month. Base models start at $7,680, and customers will have the choice of either gasoline or diesel engines.
That might sound like a bargain, but the Figo is nearly twice the price of India’s cheapest cars, such as the Tata Nano and Maruti-Suzuki 800. The country’s per capita income is less than $1,000, so even the most affordable vehicle remains a huge investment for many Indian car buyers.
Maruti-Suzuki, the Indian arm of the Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corporation, controls roughly 50 percent of India’s automotive market because of a vast lineup of economical small cars. Last year, Tata, India’s largest indigenous automaker, introduced the $2,500 Nano. G.M., Volkswagen, Hyundai and many other carmakers are planning similar low-cost vehicles specifically tailored to India.
Ford’s edge could come from maintaining an emphasis on performance, safety and driving dynamics. The available 1.2-liter gas-powered 4-cylinder makes 70 horsepower. While this might sound puny by United States standards, it’s double the power of the 2-cylinder engine found in the Nano. Air bags and anti-lock brakes (a rarity in most Indian vehicles) are offered on upper trim levels of the Figo.
While the Figo’s bland exterior won’t blaze any new styling trails, the car’s small size and nimble steering should make it adept at coping with crowded Indian roads. The clutch has also been designed for low effort, to help take the pain out of dealing with India’s notorious urban traffic jams.
Ford has invested $500 million upgrading its plant in Chennai, India, to coincide with Figo production. Annual capacity will be doubled, to 200,000 units, and there are plans to export the car to Asia-Pacific and African markets. The Figo might not be coming to the United States, but it still represents a cornerstone of Ford’s global small car strategy.

Intel launches all-new PC architecture with Core i5/i7 CPUs

Intel brought its mainstream desktop CPU lineup into the Nehalem era today with the launch of the Core i7 860 and 870, and the Core i5 750. Also launched today is the P55 chipset, which implements a new system architecture that represents a significant break with Intel's past. In this short article, we'll take a brief look at each, in turn.
In previous articles we've covered Nehalem's microarchitectural improvements to the Core 2 Duo lineage, so we won't recap that here. What is worth repeating, though, is that Nehalem is Intel's first x86 design to feature an on-die memory controller. This significantly changes the system topology, but in a direction that AMD already went way back in 2003.

Volvo XC70 to get online Rear Seat Entertainment System

Volvo has developed a solid reputation for being an extremely safe vehicle to be in, and the 2010 Volvo XC70 goes one up by being one of the first vehicles in the world that will boast an Internet-connected Rear Seat Entertainment System, powered by Windows XP. It will hook up to the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection while featuring a 500GB hard drive (pretty spacious, I must say). While this innovative product still remains in the conceptual phase, it will enable customers to surf the Internet while they’re on the road, downloading applications to personalize their Volvo to their lifestyle while enjoying video as well as unlimited music downloads thanks to a digital touchscreen display. Apart from that, the RSEi-500 also enables customers to hook up their vehicle to their home computer, which would in turn allow video, audio and other home data content to be transferred to the vehicle’s on board computer in a jiffy.
Volvo Cars of North America has also forged a working relationship with Azentek Corporation and Gracenote in order to further explore the possibility of bringing this revolutionary product to the market. You will be able to check out a demonstration of the Volvo XC70 at the Chicago Auto Show, where it hooks up to the Internet using turbocharged speeds that is found in the Sprint 4G via its new Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot.
This new development ought to keep those backseat drivers occupied (and quiet, since their attention will be riveted on whatever they’re listening to or watching instead of nagging you on which road to take as well as how fast/slow you’re going), letting them navigate their music collections by mood, and display lyrics in North America, artist biographies as well as reviews of the current music being played. All this talk is making the Volvo XC70 shape up to be a pretty interesting vehicle to purchase in the near future. Let’s hope the motor company doesn’t go under before it arrives in whatever country you’re residing in.

Sony rolls out first Blu-ray 3D-ready player

Sony is at the forefront of things yet again with the launch of its first Blu-ray 3D-ready player in the market, known as the BDP-S470 for those of you who absolutely love memorizing gizmos by their names. This model is not ready to display Blu-ray 3D content just yet, but it will be able to do so later this summer via a firmware upgrade, and we do believe that this is the same firmware which will enable the Sony PS3 to handle 3D playback over Blu-ray as well. Apart from that, Sony has also made known that its BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc model and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems will be able to support Blu-ray 3D as well via their respective firmware updates this summer.
It was at the most recent CES where we were treated to a plethora of 3D TVs, including a live 3D performance by Taylor Swift before being whisked away to Los Angeles to attend another awards show. I digress – all the new models will not only be able to handle 3D playback support, but can also instantly stream movies, videos, music and more from Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora (this Spring), NPR, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, and over 25 total providers through the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video platform as long as you have a decent broadband Internet connection.
Another unique selling point of these new models would appeal to iPhone and iPod touch owners, as long as they decide to control the players thanks to a free app called “BD Remote” which is downloadable via the Apple App store. This app will enable the iPhone or iPod touch to double up as a remote control, letting one access the Blu-ray Disc’s details including jacket artwork, actor, and production information from a highly portable device. All of Sony’s new stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players can start-up from power off in about three seconds, which makes it pretty speedy in comparison to its rivals. The Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray Disc Player ought to hit the market sometime this month for around $200.
